β 5 Days to Better Accounting Spreadsheets
Lesson 5 of 5
Day 5: Add reconciliation checks
What you will be able to do
Write controls that say OK or CHECK, compare to the cent, and read the overall result as evidence for a few things and proof of none.
The reconciliation balances today. Will it next month, when somebody pastes in a new export and a category is spelt a new way? A control is a formula that notices for you. It cannot make a number right, but it can make a wrong number loud, which is most of what a month-end close needs. Each control you write today protects something you built this week, and one of them will say CHECK, on purpose.

Step 1 of 8 Β· 1 point
In B54, test that the reconciliation has nothing unexplained: OK when B41 rounds to zero, CHECK when it does not.
