Lesson 4 of 5

Day 4: Reconcile two lists and explain the difference

What you will be able to do

Compare the bank balance with the cash book balance, put every item that explains the gap on its own line, and finish with nothing unexplained.

The bank statement ends at $31,333.55 and the cash book at $30,821.40. Both are honest, and they are $512.15 apart. A reconciliation is not a hunt for the one error: it is a short list of reasons, each with an amount, that together account for the whole gap. You are finished when the unexplained line reads 0.00. The labels you built on Day 2 do most of the work.
