What you will learn

  • Turn a messy transaction export into clean dates, references, categories and amounts, and leave the original untouched
  • Set aside blank and repeated lines, and prove every line carries exactly one status
  • Match the cash book to the bank in both directions and explain every difference in a reconciliation
  • Summarise actual against budget by category and by week with SUMIFS, and flag the variances worth a question
  • Build a month-end pack whose controls say OK or CHECK, then feed in bad lines and watch them fire
  • Build PivotTables from clean source data: grouping, Show Values As, calculated fields and GETPIVOTDATA
  • Use SUMPRODUCT, INDIRECT, 3D references and the dynamic arrays UNIQUE, SORT, FILTER and SEQUENCE
  • Model with Goal Seek, data tables, Scenario Manager, NPV and IRR, with inputs kept apart from calculations
  • Prepare journal entries, budget and reconciliation workpapers, and a workbook ready to hand over

Requirements

  • You should be comfortable with basic formulas such as SUM and IF. If you can work through the free five-day course without getting stuck, you are ready.
  • A laptop or desktop with a web browser for the core lessons, and Excel on Windows or Mac for the six modules.
  • Not sure? Take the free 5-day course first.

Description

Every month someone has to turn a raw transaction export into numbers a manager can rely on. This course walks you through that job from start to finish, on one month of a small business's books, and shows you how to build it so it rebuilds itself next month.

The first eight lessons run here in your browser, on a live spreadsheet that marks every step as you answer it. You clean the export without touching the original, set aside the blank and repeated lines, match the cash book to the bank in both directions, explain every difference in a reconciliation, compare actual with budget by category and by week, and assemble a pack whose controls say OK or CHECK. Then you feed bad lines through it and watch the controls catch them.

Six modules then take you into Excel itself, each with its own workbook to download: two on PivotTables for reporting, and four on the workpapers finance teams live in, from multi-sheet references, SUMPRODUCT and dynamic arrays to Goal Seek, data tables, Scenario Manager, journals, budgets and a workbook you can hand over.

It ends with a graded reporting task on a fresh dataset, timed, and marked on what your workbook produces.

How the marking works

Answers are checked by what they produce, not by how they are typed. If the task asks for the amount that matches an invoice number, both of these are marked correct, because both return the same figure:

=XLOOKUP(A2, F2:F40, G2:G40)=INDEX(G2:G40, MATCH(A2, F2:F40, 0))

LogicExcel teaches spreadsheets by doing rather than watching: you practise in a live grid and get feedback on every answer. Every exercise is written against a defined spec and tested, so the expected answer and the feedback match what Excel itself returns, and a person checks each lesson before it goes live. The free courses and practice lessons on the site are built the same way as this one.

What if I get stuck?

You can try every step as often as you like, each answer comes with feedback, and the help on the site is there if you need a person. There are no scheduled sessions and nobody marks your work by hand: it is all marked automatically.

Do I need Excel installed?

Not for the core lessons: you practise those inside Logic Excel in your browser, on a laptop or desktop screen. The pivot table and workpaper modules are done in Excel itself, with a workbook you download from the course, and you type what your workbook shows into the site to be marked. Excel on Windows or Mac is best for those, because a few steps use Goal Seek, data tables and Scenario Manager.

Is this for accountants only?

It uses accounting examples, because that is the work it is built around, but it suits anyone who builds recurring reports from transaction data, including bookkeepers and finance staff.
