- A2 has extra spaces around the name. Clean it with =TRIM(A2). - TRIM strips the spaces at each end and leaves Lee. The original cell is unchanged — TRIM returns a new value.
- A3 has a trailing space. Clean that one too: =TRIM(A3). - Trailing spaces are invisible and they break VLOOKUP and COUNTIF. TRIM removes them.
- A4 has two spaces between the words. TRIM collapses those to one: =TRIM(A4). - TRIM leaves a single space between words. Ann Marie becomes Ann Marie. That is the whole job of the function besides the ends.
- Prove the spaces are there. Length of the dirty value: =LEN(A2). - Lee is two leading spaces + Lee (3) + two trailing spaces = 7 characters. LEN counts every space.
- Now the length after cleaning: =LEN(TRIM(A2)). - TRIM(A2) is Lee, three characters. The drop from 7 to 3 is how you confirm a cleanup worked before you paste values over the source.
- COUNTIF cannot see Lee in a dirty list. Count the clean name: =COUNTIF(B2:B4,TRIM(A2)) — B already holds the trimmed values, so use =COUNTIF(B2:B4,"Lee"). - After TRIM, Lee matches Lee. This is why Remove Duplicates reports 0 hits on messy imports — fix spaces first, then count or delete.
