What is the MO-200 Excel Certification?

The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel Associate exam — exam code MO-200 — tests your ability to use Microsoft Excel at an intermediate level. It is the entry-level Excel certification from Microsoft, designed for anyone who uses Excel regularly in an academic or professional setting.

Passing MO-200 demonstrates that you can create, manage, and distribute professional spreadsheets. The exam is recognised globally and is a credible addition to a CV or LinkedIn profile, particularly for roles in finance, administration, data analysis, and operations.

Exam details:
  • Exam code: MO-200 (Excel 2019) / also available as MO-201 (Excel Expert)
  • Duration: approximately 50 minutes
  • Format: live in-application tasks (not multiple choice)
  • Passing score: 700 out of 1000
  • Provider: Certiport / Microsoft

MO-200 Exam Objectives

The exam is divided into five skill domains. Each domain is weighted differently.

1. Manage Worksheets and Workbooks (10–15%)

  • Navigate within workbooks
  • Format worksheets and workbook content
  • Customise options and views
  • Configure content for collaboration
What to practice: Navigating between sheets, renaming sheets, hiding/showing columns, applying cell styles, and setting print areas.

2. Manage Data Cells and Ranges (35–40%)

This is the largest section. Expect questions on:

  • Inserting and formatting data
  • Defining and referencing named ranges
  • Summarising data using conditional formatting
  • Constructing formulas: =SUM(), =AVERAGE(), =COUNT(), =MAX(), =MIN()
  • Using absolute and relative references ($A$1 vs A1)
  • Flash Fill and Text to Columns
  • Sorting and filtering data
Key formula syntax to know:
  • =SUM(A1:A10) — sum a range
  • =AVERAGE(B2:B20) — average a range
  • =COUNTIF(A:A,">=50") — count with condition
  • =IF(A2>100,"High","Low") — conditional output

3. Create Tables (10–15%)

  • Create and format Excel Tables (Ctrl+T)
  • Modify table styles and options
  • Filter and sort table data
  • Use structured references (e.g., =Table1[Amount])

4. Perform Operations Using Formulas and Functions (10–15%)

  • Reference data across sheets using 3D references
  • Use SUMIF, AVERAGEIF, COUNTIF
  • Use logical functions: =IF(), =AND(), =OR()
  • Use lookup functions: =VLOOKUP(), =HLOOKUP()
  • Use date functions: =TODAY(), =NOW(), =DATE()

5. Create Charts and Objects (10–15%)

  • Create bar, column, line, and pie charts
  • Modify and format chart elements
  • Insert shapes, SmartArt, and text boxes

How to Study for MO-200

Step 1: Practice the core functions daily

The exam is live in-application — you perform tasks in real Excel, not answer questions. Muscle memory matters.

Focus on these function areas first:

  • SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, MIN

  • IF with AND/OR

  • COUNTIF and SUMIF

  • VLOOKUP

  • TODAY and DATE functions

Use LogicExcel's interactive lessons to build this muscle memory. Start with Lesson 9 — IF Function, then work through the SUM, COUNT, and lookup categories.

Step 2: Master keyboard shortcuts

The exam is timed. Shortcuts save critical minutes:

  • Ctrl+T — create a table

  • Ctrl+Z — undo

  • Ctrl+Shift+L — toggle filters

  • Alt+Enter — line break in a cell

  • F4 — repeat last action / toggle absolute reference

Step 3: Work with real data

Create a practice workbook with a dataset of 100+ rows. Build pivot tables, apply conditional formatting, write VLOOKUP formulas. The exam uses realistic datasets, not toy examples.

Step 4: Take a practice exam

Certiport provides official practice exams through GMetrix or MeasureUp. These simulate the live-in-application format.

Common Mistakes on MO-200

1. Confusing relative and absolute references =A1B1 copied down changes both references. =$A$1B1 locks column A. Know when to use each. 2. Forgetting to press Enter after formulas Exam scoring checks cell values. A formula left in edit mode scores zero. 3. Using VLOOKUP with wrong column index =VLOOKUP(A2, B:D, 3, 0) returns column D (the 3rd column of the range B:D). Count columns from the start of your table_array, not from column A. 4. Not formatting as a table before using structured references Structured references ([@Amount]) only work inside an Excel Table. Convert the range first with Ctrl+T.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is the MO-200 exam? For someone who uses Excel at work regularly, MO-200 is achievable in 2–4 weeks of focused preparation. The live in-application format is harder than multiple choice since you must actually perform the tasks — but it is also more rewarding. Focus on hands-on practice, not reading. Do I need Excel 2019 specifically? The MO-200 exam is based on Excel 2019. Microsoft 365 subscribers will find the interface nearly identical. Excel 2016 users may notice small interface differences but the core functionality is the same. How much does the MO-200 exam cost? Pricing varies by region and testing centre, but typically ranges from $80–$150 USD. Check the Certiport website for current pricing in your country. Is MO-200 worth it? For early-career professionals in finance, administration, or data roles — yes. It provides a verifiable credential that demonstrates real Excel competence beyond a self-assessed "proficient in Excel" claim on a CV. What is the difference between MO-200 and MO-201? MO-200 is the Associate level covering core Excel features. MO-201 is the Expert level covering advanced formulas, Power Query, custom formats, and macros. Pass MO-200 before attempting MO-201.
